Ryan Matteson is the Deputy Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Information Technology Services. His responsibilities include making sure that three main areas - Information Security, Policy, and Technology - happen on a continuous, on-going basis. His team produces information security reports that protect our campus from cyber threats as well as strengthen Cal Poly's presence on the internet. The policy aspect includes managing accessibility by making sure that ITS technology and websites are consistently available to students, staff, & faculty across all their different devices. The final facet of Matteson's position includes proactively, not retroactively, preparing for Cal Poly's future by looking into all the technological changes to come, and adapting as needed, such as the current push to transition into the Cloud.
Matteson graduated with both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Computer Science from Cal Poly, and has remained in San Luis Obispo ever since. He originally started his career at Cal Poly by working as a Student Assistant while attending school. He also pursued other jobs in the area, including writing software for various banks within the community and being an expert witness dealing with cybersecurity for trials, before returning to work at Cal Poly. Matteson has appreciated being able to utilize his skills in software and cybersecurity, in combination with his passion for supporting one of society's most important assets – Higher Education, in his current role at ITS. Matteson spends his free time being involved in the Cal Poly Children's Center where his daughter attends school, or pursuing one of his numerous hobbies including rock climbing, photography, and even scuba diving.
